This page explains how HalalScan handles the data needed to scan products, save decisions, and provide halal verification features.

Last updated: October 5, 2026

Information we collect

HalalScan may collect account details, scanned barcode values, product searches, saved scans, selected ingredient flags, scan preferences, and support messages you send us.

If you choose to use personalization features, we may store your checks-for profile, strictness setting, common flags, and region preference so future halal decisions are more relevant.

Camera and barcode scanning

Camera access is used to scan product barcodes. HalalScan uses the barcode value to look up product information and return a halal, haram, or needs-review decision.

HalalScan does not record or store camera video or photos. Only the barcode value is used.

Barcode scanning does not require microphone access — HalalScan does not request or use the microphone.

HalalScan does not access your device's photo library. Scans are performed live through the camera; no images are read from or saved to your photo roll.

How we use information

  • Show halal, haram, and needs-review decisions.
  • Save scan history and product decisions when enabled.
  • Highlight ingredient concerns such as gelatin, alcohol, animal enzymes, and unknown additives.
  • Improve barcode matching, product search, and ingredient classification quality.
  • Provide support, security, and account-related messages.

Region and regional labeling

Ingredient labels and product rules can vary by country or region. HalalScan uses the region from your device's language and region settings, or a region you choose, to interpret product labels more accurately.

HalalScan does not request access to your device's location.

Third-party services

HalalScan uses these service providers: Supabase (account authentication and database storage); Apple and Google (Sign in with Apple and Google sign-in, if you choose them); the Apple App Store and RevenueCat (subscription purchases and subscription status, using an account identifier and purchase history); PostHog (product analytics); and Open Food Facts (product lookup — the barcode or search text you enter is sent to Open Food Facts to find product information). We also use providers for hosting and email. These providers process information only as needed to run the service.

HalalScan sends app usage events to PostHog during use of the app, such as app opens, buttons you tap, scans, and subscription purchase steps. These events may include the barcode of a scanned product, the halal assessment result, and summary information about classification signals (for example, how many flagged ingredients were found). Events are associated with a device-level analytics identifier, not your account or email address. We use this information to understand and improve HalalScan, including improving classification accuracy, and not for advertising or for tracking you across other companies' apps or websites.

Product information may come from third-party or public product databases. Product names, ingredients, images, and barcode records may belong to their respective owners.

Data retention

We keep information for as long as needed to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and maintain accurate account or subscription records.

You can delete your account in the app from Profile > Delete account. When you do, we delete or anonymize your personal information unless retention is required for security, legal, tax, or operational reasons.

Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription. You can manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple account settings.
